Smugglers have long tried to smuggle equipment into China to avoid paying customs duties. Some do it the old-fashioned way, and one woman decided that she could pretend to be pregnant and thus transport 200 CPUs and nine iPhones.
The girl, whom the authorities call Zhao, arrived at the port city of Zhuhai from Macau. The settlement borders Macau, so the border guards know that many people are trying to smuggle, and easily identified the girl. She said that her “baby” was five months old, even though her stomach looked like she was due the other day.
Naturally, she was taken for an examination, during which a belly button was found. It contained 202 Alder Lake processors and nine iPhones. The cost of a “baby” can start at $37,000.
Now Zhao faces a prison sentence and a large fine. It’s amazing she could get past the frame detector with that much cargo.
