The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was not liked by all fans of Tolkien’s books.

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was not liked by all fans of Tolkien’s books: the audience rating of the series on Rotten Tomatoes is 39%. Amazon doesn’t worry about that.

In an interview with ComicBook, Amazon Studios head of TV Vernon Sanders talked about the reaction to the show and the competition with House of the Dragon, and here are the most interesting moments from his story.

The rings of power are success. Amazon was hoping for success, but worried about how a show this big and expensive would perform. In a sense, the show was an adventure.

And it paid off, and it did exactly what Amazon had hoped it would do. Service made a very large bet and won, and the company felt “relieved and incredibly satisfied”.

The mixed reaction from the fans is normal, it’s just impossible to please all the fans of the universe that they love so much. But Amazon has made a serious effort to understand what viewers are really thinking.

The service conducted a survey of thousands of viewers of the series; among them were both fans of Tolkien’s books and fans of Jackson’s films. Viewers were asked about each episode, so the service could see which moments had the most questions.

The rights holders to Tolkien’s work have no questions. The series was created by Simon Tolkien, the writer’s grandson, and the Tolkien Estate, which owns the rights to his work; they endorsed The Rings of Power.

The confrontation with “House of the Dragon” did not surprise Amazon: in the place of HBO, the company would also release its show simultaneously with the competing series. Sanders believes that Rings of Power even benefited from such competition due to the show’s tone being very different from that of House of the Dragon.

The simultaneous airing of the two series has generated additional and a large interest among fantasy fans. Perhaps this attracted an additional audience to the Rings of Power.

Sauron no longer has any reason to keep his identity a secret, so in season two, the audience will see him in all his glory. In season one, Sauron was hidden to surprise the fans who knew he was supposed to appear – that’s how adaptations work.

The second season of “Rings of Power” is already filming, and it is unlikely to premiere before 2024.
