“Into the Abyss” is the fourth mission in Titanfall 2.

IGN has invited game designer David Shaver to share the story behind the creation of the fourth mission in Titanfall 2, titled “Into the Abyss”. It’s one of those moments where the hero leaves the fur and is forced to survive in this world as a vulnerable human being.

The pilot will travel through a giant factory that is always in motion. The setting was inspired by a scene in the comedy fantasy film “In Search of the Galaxy” The whole level has become just that, with a bunch of constantly moving elements. Only the incredible mobility of the hero allows it to pass.

The game was originally based on the simple idea of two titans fighting and smashing each other’s bodies. David came up with self-healing locations, because it’s much more interesting if in the process of such a fight, the structures on the field will reappear, and not always as they were.

So we came up with the idea of a special training ground for the Titans and a giant factory underneath that to make the training ground work. Ironically, in the process of developing the level, the original key idea of giant robot battles was pushed to the background, and all the focus was on the pilot’s journey.

Titanfall 2 is available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
