RPG is a flexible genre that can encompass a wide variety of themes and ideas. In 2022, there was no shortage of exciting RPGs for consoles and PCs. But there’s a chance that you might have missed one or the other. And that’s why I’m presenting you with the top of the best role-playing games.
Maybe we should start with something a little heavier. Elden Ring has been one of the most anticipated games in the community for many years and was able to make a lot of noise in the information space at the release, literally conquering both soul-like fans and those who previously sidestepped this subgenre.
Elden Ring offers the player the role of the departed to immerse themselves in the open world of Inter-Earth. By adding just one open-world variable to the successful formula of soul-likes, Hidetaka Miyazaki has managed to create a truly interesting game that pulls players into the swamp as one.
Role-playing games aren’t always about magic and dragons and knights. Sometimes knights are enough. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord was only officially released in October of this year, which means it can be added to the list of the best RPGs of 2022 with a clear conscience. And the game clearly deserves it.
The role-playing space in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is incredibly large. The fairly down-to-earth historical setting only helps to immerse you deeper into the game. The game is essentially a sandbox that the developers send you to play in from the beginning. But you have to be careful, because if you start this medieval sandbox, you risk losing contact with the real world for a couple of months.
We’ll be diluting the harsh role-playing adventures of harsh men with the warm and light adventures of the animated alchemist girl, which, by the way, is only for the most brutal members of the video game community.
In Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream, you will once again be collecting everything and everything. You will spend hours in the alchemical cauldron creating all kinds of objects. The second part of the adventure of the alchemist girl Sophie Neuenmüller is a standard Japanese role-playing game. If you’re familiar with the Atelier series, but for some reason missed Atelier Sophie 2, it’s time to catch up, because the third part of the adventures of Razeline Stout is coming.
Piranha Bytes projects, despite their budget, a sloppy combat system, a huge number of bugs and creepy character animation, players for some reason love with all their hearts. And no wonder, because the German studio has been making, if not silly, but incredibly exciting and soulful role-playing games for decades.
If you were a child/adolescent fan of Gothic and Risen, both games can give you dozens of hours of exciting adventures. ELEX II is, as you might have guessed, a sequel, whose task was to directly continue the story of the original ELEX. So if you have not read the first part, you shouldn’t read the second.
If you’re willing to put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to learn about complex systems, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will give you a role-playing experience that few games can match. Its world is epic, danger lurks everywhere, and the characters you interact with as you go through it will make you emotionally attached to them.
The old formula of pocket monster games has been expanded with a host of new ideas, including a new combat system and an open world filled with a variety of Pokémon. Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a rather significant departure from the usual franchise trends. It is a remake of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and the latter’s main part Scarlet and Violet.
And while not all Pokemon fans appreciated the game’s “step aside” and many even derided the game for, to put it mildly, its poor visuals and overall world emptiness, sales speak for themselves 12 million copies sold in the first few months of its release is truly impressive. That’s the power of a brand.
From a technological point of view, Monochrome Mobius is immensely outdated, but it is primarily clinging to an excellent plot and combat system. I decided to take the opportunity to remind the players that the new part of my favorite Utawarerumono series has been released in our universe.
The young Oshtor is the center of the story, and he is accompanied by the young Munetchik and Mikazuchi. It’s the development of characters from previous Utawarerumono series that we’ll be watching. As a fan of the universe, I rate this JRPG as highly as I can, and therefore I see no reason not to include it in this top of the best role-playing games.
Chained Echoes is a true love letter to the Japanese role-playing game genre of the late 90s. If you’ve ever sat around watching Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire 2, and Illusion of Gaia, Chained Echoes will literally take you back to the carefree days of your youth, when the biggest challenge was doing homework.
In the four dozen hours you spend going through it, you’ll surely enjoy the step-by-step combat, the sophisticated skill and equipment system, the 16-bit game-style graphics, and the soundtrack like in good old RPGs.
Yes, of course, this list of the best RPGs is far from perfect, and there is a good chance that some video games have been unfairly overlooked. So please feel free to share your list of the best RPGs of 2022.
