Avatar: The Way of Water continues to collect worldwide, holding the number one spot in the box office. However, the film did not have the big numbers that some had expected.
Most likely, like the original, the sequel will be a gradual, slow-moving collection of the cherished $2 billion needed to make it a success. James Cameron himself said the latter, admitting that his project was an “adventure”.
Analysts predicted that Avatar 2 would take in 40-50% in the US compared to the first weekend ($134 million). Their predictions have come true the film is expected to gross $82 million over the Christmas weekend (Friday to Monday). That will bring the domestic collection to 278 million.
The worldwide box office reached a record $855 million. It looks like the movie will hit $1 billion next week.
It’s no secret that the huge cost of production, marketing and visual effects — $350 million — has led to a high point of no return. The first Avatar is still the highest-grossing film of all time, with $2.92 billion.
