Overseas, Avatar 2 earned another $301 million, bringing the film’s international box office to $435 million in its opening weekend.

This is the third-largest theatrical release during the pandemic. It is followed by Marvel Studios’ blockbusters Spider-Man: Homecoming and Doctor Strange: Into the Madness, which grossed $600 million and $442 million worldwide in their first weekend, respectively.

James Cameron’s films tend to start out slower and catch up with the times, for example, the first Avatar opened in 2009 with just $77 million domestically, but showed high endurance at the box office. The sequel is expected to have the same endurance, especially since the film will not have big competitors in the near future.
