Diablo IV will feature separate segments with NPC companions.

Diablo fans have a lot of different opinions about companions. Some people love them, some people hate them. But the reality is, they’re not going anywhere. Exactly how the companion system will work in Diablo IV will be revealed in the future, however, judging by the recent announcement, they will only appear in the story campaign.

In Diablo II, we could hire companions to fight the creatures of hell together. In Diablo 3, the system changed to three companions representing different classes as the campaign progressed.

According to senior classroom designer Adam Jackson, the release version of Diablo IV will feature separate segments with NPC companions:.

The campaign will feature a number of locations where certain named NPCs will act as escorts and help in the quest against Lilith’s plans.

We don’t have anything to say about the Diablo 2 style mercenaries yet. We’re focused on the campaign.

Since Blizzard has big plans for a shoot-em-up support, we may yet see mercenary development or developers come up with something original.

Diablo IV will be released on all platforms on June 6, 2023.
