Digital Foundry recorded a video that looks back on the 2022 Games.

Digital Foundry has recorded a video that looks back on the 2022 Games. And the team came up with a list of the most timely projects that have been released in the last 12 months.

“There’s a lot to be said for the power of lighting. If something’s wrong with it, your brain knows it’s a video game”. That’s how Alex Battaglia started his talk. Tracing the beams and working with the light really transforms the old Portal beyond recognition. It was designed without the technology.

The host admitted that he could have gone through the Portal in an hour or less, but ended up spending more than three hours because he was looking at the lighting and how the light behaves in different situations.

The Callisto Protocol was run on Unreal Engine 4. The game is the child of Striking Distance. The developers did a phenomenal job, according to DF specialist John Linneman. It is the most downloaded game of all time, followed by The Sims 3. It’s so well done with the character models, the environments, and the facial animations.

The presenters pointed out the importance of retracing. Even the PS4 and Xbox One versions are said to have been designed with ray tracing in mind – reflections and shadows are a good example. “The world feels more complete when these features are working”, says Linneman.

The Digital Foundry team noted that the Guerrilla Games sequel managed to fix and improve every aspect of the game, compared to the first part. They even overdid it in the places that were complaining about the most. And now it looks much better”, said Battaglia.

Forbidden West’s characters are more like living people. Characters almost never stand still, but actively gesture and move. The game was also praised for its funerary lighting. Linneman remembered the behavior of grass – it moves when you walk on it. vegetation is not just responding to humans or machines, but also to small animals. Water quality was also improved by leading taste simulation waves. DF also noted the quality of the open world development, considering that it was done for two generations of PlayStation at once. Linneman is confident that in the future Guerrilla Games will be able to squeeze a lot more out of its engine.

The games below didn’t make the top 3, but DF said they stood out from the rest of the year’s projects.

2022 brought the industry a whole slew of games with West in the title, so DF’s authors couldn’t resist such a nomination.

Last year, Digital Foundry crowned Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as the “most graphonic” game of the year. Below that are LEGO Builder’s Journey and Returnal.
